+ Remember Abihu and Nadab from Lev 10?

+ Levites took the place of the firstborn. They were a substitute for the people of Israel. - Ex 32:25-29

+ v16-21 = This matches up with Ex 6:16-19

+ v21-39 = A census is taken, probably to see how many men their were to fight for the promised land.

+ If you can get your hands on an ESV Study Bible, take a look at the chart for the various positions and duties the Levites held...pretty cool. I will put them below:

Merarites - Camped on the North, Guarding and carrying the structural components of the tent and the court.

Kohathites - Camped on the South, guarding and carrying the items within the tabernacle sanctuary

Gershonites - Camped on the west, guarding and carrying the coverings, hangings, and entrance screens of the tent and the courtyard.

Moses and Priests - Camped on the east, guarding the tabernacle sanctuary and protecting Israel.

+ v40–51 Redemption of the Firstborn. The census showed there were 273 fewer Levites than firstborn males in the other tribes. To redeem these 273 Israelites who had no Levite to take their place, five shekels (v. 47) per person had to be paid. This is the tariff prescribed in Lev. 27:6 for boys under five. Five shekels would have been about a year’s pay for a herdsman. -ESVSB-

+ Chapter 4 continues discussing the importance of the Levites to the maintaining and protecting of the tabernacle. It can't be stressed how important these duties were. Again, Moses, Aaron, and others take a census most likely for preparation of the promised land.
