Overall: This chapter contains the descendants of Levi and Aaron. If you recall the entire tribe of Levi was set apart for special service to God. All priests were to come from the Levites. Most of the descendants are listed within these verses, however a few are missing as well.
"One of the insistent themes of Chronicles is that God’s grace is not nullified by human disobedience, but that rather God creates fresh opportunities for each generation to trust and obey." ESVSB
16-17 = Outside of Chronicles, there is no indication that Levites were responsible for cultic music in the First Temple, and many scholars maintain that this institution is a Second Temple innovation. JSB
16-30 = 3 divisions of the Levites are: Gershom, Kohath, & Merari
31-32 = David was a "worship leader" and prioritized music.
33 = "served" means "Literally Stood"
49 = "atonement" = Hebrew - Kaphar - to propitiate, to atone for sin.
66 = For the Chronicler, it was not just about genealogy or pedigree; it was also about the land, which was the rightful heritage of an Israelite ASB
Thought = Remember that according to Numbers 18:20-24, the tribe of Levi had no province of land as the other tribes did. Their inheritance was the Lord Himself and the tithes that the people of God brought to them.
54-81 = As a sign of their central role in the nation’s life and well-being, it was intended that the Levites, with no allocated tribal land of their own, should reside throughout the tribal territory of Israel as spiritual representatives and leaders of the people. ESVSB
