Psalm 133

This wisdom psalm celebrates the beauty of brothers in Israel dwelling together with two colorful similes that describe the blessedness of Israel being true to its calling. (ESV)

v. 1 – Brothers likely refers to families united to worship God. The ideal Israel is a community of true brotherhood, where members practice mutual concern for one another.

v. 2 – The rich and fragrant oil was poured out extravagantly, so that it ran down Aaron’s beard onto his robes. In the same way, unity of the people of God was a rich perfume making their worship acceptable to God. The image also means that when God’s people are true to their ideal, it shows genuine consecration and carrying out its mission to the world.

v. 3 – The dew from Mt. Hermon is crucial for the vegetation during the dry season and the image conveys the thought of a fruitful land and people.
