Daily Insights - Please Comment

1 Chronicles 13

1-4 = With seemingly good intentions David would try to go get the ark back. However, we don't see any consultation of God over the matter. It seems "right in the eyes of the people," to bring it back, so it must be...right?

5-7 = Thoughts - I do think that David's intentions were good here. He wanted the ark of God which represented the presence of God in Israel to be back among them. He wanted God's presence close to them. However, he underestimates the seriousness and weight of God's holiness.

6 = The Hebrew word for “dwells” means literally “the one who sits”; meaning one who literally sits, or by extension, “the one who dwells.” In the present context, and in light of 28:2 where the ark is called a “footstool for our God,” the better translation here is, “the one who is enthroned between the cherubim.” ASB

7-12 = "Despite their zeal, David and his companions on this occasion fail to respect the sanctity of the ark. Treatment of the ark is tantamount to treatment of God himself. Transporting it by cart (v. 7), as the Philistines had done (1 Samuel 6), rather than by the Levites bearing it on poles (Ex. 25:12–15; cf. note on 2 Sam. 6:3–4), demonstrated a lack of reverence for the sacred object of God’s presence and for the Law of Moses. Uzzah’s action was well-intentioned, but in taking hold of the ark as a layman, he similarly transgressed against its awesome holiness (see Num. 4:15; also note on 2 Sam. 6:6–11). The outburst of divine punishment against Uzzah both angers and frightens David, causing him to temporarily abandon the mission that had begun in such high spirits (1 Chron. 13:8). David and Israel must learn that God’s holiness is a dangerous thing and should not be treated lightly." ESVSB

11-12 = David's quick anger, mainly because of confusion, quickly turns into fear of God.

Thought = God was interested in the process of how the ark would get back to Israel as well as the ark being back there...hmmmm

Thought = Connection to 2 Sam 5 = "The material found in this ch appears in 2 Samuel in a different arrangement. 2 Sam. ch 5 places this material between David’s coronation and his capture of Jerusalem, allowing the inference that David occupied himself with personal matters (e.g., construction of his palace) before attending to the Ark. Chronicles, by placing this material between the two attempts at transferring the Ark, conveys the impression that the delay in attending to the Ark was not due to lack of motivation; rather, David was occupied with other matters...Chronicles offers no clear explanation regarding the timing behind David’s decision to again attend to the Ark; this implies that David returned to this task at the first opportunity following the activities described in ch 14." JSB

1 Chronicles 14

1-2 = David is so well respected and important that other kings are sending the best of the best to build him a house! The best part about this is that David knew this wasn't because of Him, but God. He knew his people were being blessed by God's work through Him...It's about Him, not us.

Thought = Stop taking wives. This is direct disobedience (Deut 17:17, 2 Sam 5:13). Much of David's hardships come from his many wives and children.

4 = Nathan was an ancestor of Jesus (Luke 3:31)

10 = David has learned, and will ask God if he should do battle. A man after God's heart indeed.

8-12 = The Philistines wanted nothing to do with David being king over a powerful nation. They went to battle against David, lost, and had their idols burned. Interesting thought, the Philistines brought their gods into battle to help them defeat David. When they didn't the idols were left to be burned.

14-15 = God gives David specific directions on how to defeat the Philistines...It's like using a game genie on the SuperNES (sorry for those who don't get this).

Thought = We need to stop underestimating the power of seeking God's direction in our lives. If we seek His story for our lives and ask Him to lead us step-by-step, who knows what will happen.

17 = "The Chronicler offers a summarizing comment, with another implicit contrast between David and Saul: victory leading to security for Israel and fame for David, as opposed to defeat leading to occupation of Israel’s land by foreigners and ignominy for Saul (10:7, 13–14). The LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations. Such fear will keep them from attacking Israel. See also 2 Chron. 14:14; 17:10; 20:29 for other examples of a fear sent by God on neighboring peoples." ESVSB

1 Chronicles 15

Thought = Remember, the ark won't be in a "temple" until Solomon builds it.

1-15 = David makes sure the ark is brought to the proper place in the proper manner/order. He doesn't want another "Uzza-incident." He also wants to respect God by following His requirements. David also recognizes that he indeed did not consult God the first time.

16-24 = Musicians/Singers List - This marks a turning point in the history of Israel’s worship: the Levites are appointed, under David, to a new ministry of music and praise, which will be conducted in the presence of the ark (on the significance of their leadership of worship for Israel, see 16:4–7 and note). Solomon will follow in David’s footsteps in the organization of the Levites for the temple worship (2 Chron. 8:14). ESVSB

16-28 = What an amazing moment to be a part of! The ark was now returned, God's favor rested upon David and all of Israel. One could say it was a good time to be king, and a good time to be an Israelite.

25 = The recurring use of “joy” in Chronicles emphasizes the importance of the occasion. JSB

29 = Read 2 Samuel 6:20-23 for full story. Michal had no child.

1 Chronicles 16

1-6 = The ark, signifying God's presence, is now in the midst of tabernacle once again. Worship pours out to God.

7-13 = “The Psalm is found in the Book of Psalms; its first movement (8-22) in Psalm 105:1-15; its second movement (23-33) in Psalm 96:1b-13a; its third movement (34-36) consisting of a quotation of the opening and closing sentences of Psalm 106:1-47 and 48.” (Morgan)

23-33 = The celebration in worship of God’s kingship over all the earth is fitting before his ark-throne (13:6) and should evoke a similar faith and hope in Israel. The psalm declares that the gods of the peoples are idols, whereas Israel’s God reigns and comes to judge the earth. ESVSB

Asaph = Asaph was the writer of Ps. 50 and 73— 83. Scofield

2 Samuel 5:11-6:23

Again: Thought = Connection to 2 Sam 5 = "The material found in this ch appears in 2 Samuel in a different arrangement. 2 Sam. ch 5 places this material between David’s coronation and his capture of Jerusalem, allowing the inference that David occupied himself with personal matters (e.g., construction of his palace) before attending to the Ark.

6:14 = Within Israelite society the linen ephod was worn only by priests (Ex 28:6; 1 Sm 2:18; 22:18). David was of the tribe of Judah, not the priestly tribe of Levi, yet he wore the ephod on this ceremonial occasion. In so doing he was placing himself in a priestly role, but not that of a Levitical priest. Having recently conquered Jerusalem, he assumed all the titles and offices held by its previous kings, including those of Melchizedek, ancient king of Salem (Jerusalem) who was also a priest of God Most High (Gn 14:18). In this sense David could be considered a priest, though not one that could perform the duties reserved only for Levitical priests JSB

6:20 - Michal is not praising David, she is bitter towards him.

6:22 - I think this is where David Crowder Band got their "undignified" song from.

6:23 - Michal was either turned barren or...
